Red Sox replace Lowell on ALDS roster

The Red Sox just announced they have replaced Mike Lowell (right hip strain) on the ALDS roster with infielder Gil Velazquez. Because he is being replaced mid-series, Lowell will not be eligible for the American League Championship Series should the Red Sox advance. He went 0-for-8 in two starts in the series.

Velazquez went 1-for-8 with one RBI after his recall from Pawtucket on Sept. 25. He hit .260 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI while playing all four infield positions for the PawSox; in theory, he gives the Red Sox some versatility in terms of defensive substitutions and pinch-running.
