In somewhat of a surprising move, catcher Josh Bard today was placed on unconditional release waivers by the Red Sox -- appearing to open the door wide open for George Kottaras to take over duties as the team's backup catcher.
Bard had caught almost every appearance by Tim Wakefield this spring and appeared to be the front-runner; Kottaras was out of minor-league options, but if he wasn't going to catch Wakefield, it appeared unlikely that was going to get the job. Instead, though, Bard is gone and Kottaras appears almost assured of making the Red Sox roster.
