Awards not to strive for

The three-pronged trophy for Red Sox Most Valuable Player was resting in the chair of second baseman Dustin Pedroia this afternoon, one chair over from where Tony Conigliaro Award winner Rocco Baldelli was getting ready for his first big-league start.

On the table in the middle of the room, though, was a trophy that so far appeared to have gone unclaimed: The Bringing Sexy Back Award, a silver-plated muscleman wearing nothing but a bronze Speedo. The inscription read, "Red Sox player most likely to find innuendo even if it's not there: Welcome Home Dinner 2009."

Baldelli claimed not to know who had won that particular award.

"That means it's up for grabs," one reporter said. "Could be you!"

"I'm not going for that one," Baldelli said wryly.
